About
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® made its first footprint in Bermuda in the 1940s, when four Bermudian women returned home after being initiated at Howard University, in Washinton, DC. Though informal at the time, their passion for service and sisterhood laid the foundation for what would become the Sigma Xi Omega Chapter.
After several decades of informal activity, interest was reignited in the late 1980s. Led by Soror Geraldine Lambert, local members formed an official interest group and completed their first service project in 1989. On May 19, 1990, Sigma Xi Omega was officially chartered in Paget, Bermuda, by the 22nd International President, the late Soror Janet Jones-Ballard.
For the past 35 years, Sigma Xi Omega has proudly served the Bermuda community through impactful programs and partnerships. Signature youth initiatives—including the Hal Jackson Talented Teen Program, Youth Leadership Institute (YLI), Emerging Young Leaders, ASCEND, and Cultured Pearls—have empowered countless young women through leadership development, mentorship, and scholarship opportunities.
The chapter has also focused on broader community support through educational enrichment, family strengthening, health promotion, and environmental sustainability. From annual “Back to School” drives—providing haircuts, braiding, school supplies, and uniforms—to feeding programs and beautification efforts at Shelly Bay, Sigma Xi Omega continues to uphold Alpha Kappa Alpha’s mission: to be of service to all mankind.
We are especially proud to honor Lois Perinchief, MBE, J.P., who was inducted as an Honorary Member in 2002. A true pioneer, Ms. Perinchief holds the distinction of being Bermuda’s first woman Justice of the Peace, the first woman elected as an Alderman, and the first female Mayor of St. George’s. Her life’s work reflects the very principles Alpha Kappa Alpha upholds—leadership, civic engagement, and trailblazing service.
As we celebrate over three decades of sisterhood and service, Sigma Xi Omega remains committed to transforming lives, inspiring future leaders, and uplifting the Bermuda community for generations to come.
